Aug 2002 Dear purveyers of fine tonal range, I promised you a few thoughts on the current state of German photography, so... If your eye hasn´t been permanently glued to your viewfinder, you´ll know that there are quite a number of contemporary German photographers making a big impact on the art market. For example, last year, Christie´s sold a photo by Andreas Gursky for $US 600,000 (a record), and just a few frames behind him you´ll find Ruff, Struth, Höfer, Hütte, Tillmans, Teller... most of whom have studied under Bernd & Hille Becher in Düsseldorf. What´s the big deal?...well, the pics are usually large (up to 2 x 5m), colour, and often digitally altered/enhanced. They are highly sought after, and increasingly expensive. In particular Gursky: representative of a contemporary zeitgeist a big, hi tech world...processed, packaged and delivered; with gaudy blandishments but without abandoning the [German] documentists´ observation: precise and intrinsically organised, yet powerfully and aesthetically his own. By transmuting chaos thru a Mondrian precision (NB go see the "Pollack" movie!) into a higher order to satisfy human longing which despairs in the face of the natural entropy of the world (Religion may be your only alternative!) Heavy stuff? this is Germany! Dean PS. Rumour: Gursky has been invited to work in NZ (watch this space!)
