April 1999
Don´t be misled by the picture - Winter is finally over.
Last week Spring announced its arrival with the sudden and dramatic appearance of vast expanses of bare skin - a welcome sight (I mean Spring!) after what had seemed a long hard Winter.
A direct result of the cold days and nights is my now well formed habit of "hanging around in bars"...and well, it´s 3 in the morning as I write from "le bit" - seems to be my favourite...at least the waitress is a dream. Often come here after a marathon in the darkroom. DJ mixing very loud techno, and strobe at what must be 140bpm. Strobe and a few candles are the only lighting (can hardly see what I´m thinking).
May be appropriate for what is at times a surreal city...and I´ll walk home via cracked and cobbled streets, Mercedes showrooms and long abandoned factories.
Well, gotta go write the blurb now for "Dominion Road - A Slice of Auckland" - opens 28 April (with TV coverage). Everything´s cool.
