January 2001 Dear Readers, A hectic December of teaching English up to 12 hours per day was wrapped up by a very pleasant Christmas Eve in good company. And I awoke to a perfect white Christmas (snow hadnīt been forecast either)...frantically downed an espresso, and rushed out to shoot all day (camera by Canon, film by Kodak, thermal underwear by Wilderness/Macpac!). Mind you, the days arenīt very long here in Germany at this time of year...followed by a rather nervewracking evening in the darkroom with ancient, leaky Czech developing tanks and reels that tend to rip the most promising negs, and sometimes leave me with depressingly uneven development as well (anyone at Photowarehouse want to post me one of those lovely new stainless steel sets I spied back there in October???). Anyway, this monthīs pic (no, itīs not Little Red Riding Hood!), one of the first of the day, was taken directly across my street...which serves to prove the adage that the first shot is often the best (guess I could have gone straight back to bed then!). Since school doesnīt restart for another ten days or so Iīm escaping to Morocco for a week of warm water and sun! Next month: dealing with sand in cameras and avoiding the wrath of Allah while investigating harems, or how to clean camel spittle from lenses... Bis dann, Dean
